Helping with the cost of getting children ready for school

The start of a new school year can bring extra costs at an already expensive time. GroceryAid’s School Essentials Grant helps eligible grocery colleagues with the cost of school uniform, clothing and other essentials.

The 2026 fund is now closed

The School Essentials Grant is a limited fund and applications for 2026 have now closed. We expect the grant to reopen in early summer 2027.

Keep up to date with the grant

What is the school essentials grant?

The grant is designed to help families working in grocery and receiving Universal Credit with the additional costs that come with the start of a new school year.

In recent years, eligible families have received £150 for each school-aged child, for up to three children per household. In 2026 alone, GroceryAid helped 6,667 children with school clothing and equipment through the fund.

Other support

You may be eligible for another grant

If something unexpected has happened and your household income has significantly reduced, you may be eligible for a GroceryAid financial grant. But please note that a general financial grant cannot be awarded if school uniform is the only reason for applying.
