Shirley’s Story

After fleeing an abusive relationship Shirley needed help to rebuild her life with a safe place for her and her daughter to live.

Shirley left an abusive relationship last year and was put in touch with GroceryAid by Citizens Advice. Shirley had literally fled while her partner was at work, taking only what she and her daughter could carry. They had no furniture and few belongings. We gave Shirley a crisis grant of £750 and bought her a bed and bedding. Whilst Shirley puts on a brave face for the sake of her daughter, it’s clear when talking to her that the situation has taken its toll. We’ve also told her about the emotional advice and counselling services available through the Helpline, just in case she needs more support.
