Corner shop owner Ryan

GroceryAid steps in to help single father and his children who care for him.

Ryan and sonRyan*, a single parent in his 50s, lives with two of his three sons above his corner shop. He is an active member of his local community and has been running his corner shop for many years. Sadly Ryan was recently diagnosed with Cancer and the treatment has left him very weak and unable to work. Macmillan Cancer Support advised Ryan to contact GroceryAid to see if we could help him and his family.

Ryan’s eldest son has left home, but his other two are still in full-time education, aged 19 and 12. Their lives are very different from before their father was ill. They have come together to run the business between them and care for their father, who spends his days in a room behind the shop.

With money tight, the family was unable to replace essential items including their washing machine and fridge freezer which had both broken down. This put extra pressure on Ryan’s sons who were already struggling to manage their daily household tasks, shop duties and attending school while caring for their father.

GroceryAid Carers logoGroceryAid immediately stepped in to replace the broken appliances and also gave the two youngest sons a £150 dependant payment each at Christmas. GroceryAid is continuing to support the family with quarterly payments while Ryan recovers from his treatment. This extra help has made a big difference and enabled them to balance caring with their everyday lives, while keeping the family business going.
