Weetabix has supported GroceryAid for many years and is one of our Gold Award winners.  Here Ricky Hammond and Gemma Totman tell us more about Weetabix’s charity strategy for success.

Ricky and Gemma volunteer on the Southern Network committee and are the driving force behind Weetabix’s charity strategy, which is focused on two ways of supporting GroceryAid.

Through the GroceryAid Network scheme Ricky and Gemma spend their own time driving awareness of GroceryAid through Weetabix, from Head Office to the factory to ensure all Weetabix colleagues know about the potential support available to them.

"To ensure we reach as many of our Weetabix and industry colleagues as we can, we developed a full year charity activity plan, with a different activity each month reaching out to factories, offices, canteens, as well as third party hauliers and suppliers. "

Ricky and Gemma’s commitment to raising awareness for GroceryAid was clear when they took part in supporting GA Day in 2020, a day designed to create a thunderclap of awareness through the grocery industry. Their plan involved visiting eight of the Weetabix factories where they filled the main common spaces and desks with GroceryAid information. They secured a slot at a company-wide briefing and also posted on the corporate LinkedIn channel.

Reaching over 1,000 colleagues through multiple channels ensures that Weetabix colleagues know about the services that are available to them through GroceryAid.

In addition to this awareness work, Weetabix ensures they are a major sponsor of some of GroceryAid’s flagship events, and that the commercial team attends events such as The GroceryAid Ball and The Sporting Lunch. The combination of sponsorship and attendance allows them to both showcase the Weetabix brand to thousands of attendees throughout the year and also reward and recognise colleagues with tickets to events. Alongside this, they secure CSR budget to support regional events and use them as main team-building exercises outside of the office.

Why do Ricky and Gemma volunteer for GroceryAid?

"We have found that it's a great platform for raising your own visibility internally within Weetabix and we are able to engage more at all levels of the business within all departments. Taking a leadership stance on your role within the committee has helped our careers and given us the opportunity to build on our confidence, presentation skills, and creativity. "
